Osteoarthritis is a disease of cartilage. The cartilage becomes soft, then irregular, then wears out like the tread on a tire.

The cause is usually unknown, and despite medicines, shots and other treatments to relieve pain, the cartilage continues to wear down until bone rubs on bone. Once that occurs, the usual medical treatments fail to work.

Knee x-rays, taken while standing, can indicate if a specific treatment may be right for you.
